When I was in seventh grade one of our primary sources of entertainment was visiting the local roller rink, Skateland, each Friday night. One of my favorite events was the “couples skate” where I got to hold my girlfriend’s hand as we made our way around the oval.
On this particular Friday I could tell something wasn’t quite right with my girl Cindy. While in the restroom I heard the announcer call for a “couples skate.” Imagine my surprise when I returned to find Cindy skating with notorious bad boy (and now my arch enemy) Randy.
So while they were skating their couples skate I went to the DJ and asked him to play this song.
Alas, it didn’t help and our two-week romance ended. Cindy and I remained good friends and her time with Randy ended after less than a week.
The Beatles’ Second Album is the Beatles’ second Capitol Records album, and their third album released in the United States including Introducing… The Beatles released three months earlier on Vee-Jay Records. The Beatles’ Second Album replaced Meet the Beatles! at number one on the album charts in the US.
This is my first time listening to “You Can’t Do That” which led to an exploration of what other songs were on this album. Thanks for the trivia and the side trip! I think my favorite part of the song is the way it trails off at the end.
Funny and a cool song. Such a teenager, those were the ways to get messages across with a song. I remember those times 🙂
Precious memories are often triggered by music. I remember a trip long ago when “Horse with no Name” was popular. Every time I hear that song, I am whipped back into that car, remembering those people… fun times! Thanks for sharing, Brad.
Love the blog Brad. That rat bastard Randy!! I also have many good memories of skating!! Ann and I also enjoyed a Beatles Tribute on our recent cruise. Two of band mbers had hair like me but wore nice wigs!!!
Yes, I remember a few Friday nights at Skateland! What good memories (for the most part).
this is great. thanks for sharing!
I know that Skateland if you mean the one on S. Campbell. We could’ve been there at the same time! Great story, Brad!
