Happy Camper

I have to admit, Sunday was not my favorite day growing up. While my friends were playing in the vacant lot next door I was getting dressed for church in my suit and tie. Sunday school was okay but 10 year-old boys had better things to do than sit in a pew listening to the pastor talk about the Bible. On the way home my parents talked about the inspiring sermon, but in my opinion it was really loooong. I did however do some of my best doodling during those sermons.

Being affiliated with the church did have its perks. Every summer I got to go to camp Yo-Ko-Mo for a week of summer camp. One by one everyone was assigned to a camp family consisting of eight-ten campers and two counselors. Families would compete with each other throughout the week in various games but more importantly would share Godly experiences. We had a “Home in the Woods” where we would sing songs around the campfire, cook breakfast on a “buddy burner” (3 pound coffee can with a hole in one side), and talk about all the ways we experienced God’s blessings throughout the day. Every evening after dinner we had a worship service at Vesper Point, a scenic overlook on the bluff of one of the rivers running through the camp. We experienced God’s gifts using all five of our senses. Of course I made sure to find a girlfriend to spend time with during the week. When it came time to go we shed many tears, exchanged addresses and promised to write.

This experience taught me that God is everywhere. Thanks mom and dad for dragging me to church every Sunday and making sure I had a chance to learn about God’s blessings at a very young age.

Things We Said Today” is a song written by Paul McCartney and credited to Lennon–McCartney. It is from the album A Hard Day’s Night, the third studio album by English rock band the Beatles, released on 10 July 1964, with side one containing songs from the soundtrack to their film A Hard Day’s Night. The American version of the album was released two weeks earlier, on 26 June 1964 by United Artists Records, with a different track listing.

Skating Away

TheBeatlesSecondAlbumreissuecoverWhen I was in seventh grade one of our primary sources of entertainment was visiting the local roller rink, Skateland, each Friday night. One of my favorite events was the “couples skate” where I got to hold my girlfriend’s hand as we made our way around the oval.

On this particular Friday I could tell something wasn’t quite right with my girl Cindy. While in the restroom I heard the announcer call for a “couples skate.” Imagine my surprise when I returned to find Cindy skating with notorious bad boy (and now my arch enemy) Randy.

So while they were skating their couples skate I went to the DJ and asked him to play this song.

Alas, it didn’t help and our two-week romance ended. Cindy and I remained good friends and her time with Randy ended after less than a week.

The Beatles’ Second Album is the Beatles’ second Capitol Records album, and their third album released in the United States including Introducing… The Beatles released three months earlier on Vee-Jay Records. The Beatles’ Second Album replaced Meet the Beatles! at number one on the album charts in the US.

Happy Valentine’s Day

my-valentine-card-PEvery February 14th, across the United States and in other places around the world, candy, flowers and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. But who is this mysterious saint, and where did these traditions come from? Click here to find out more about the history of this centuries-old holiday, from ancient Roman rituals to the customs of Victorian England, including videos, interesting articles, pictures, historical features and more.

Linda and I have our own Valentine’s Day tradition. We avoid restaurants and share a special Valentine’s Day meal at home. She watches numerous TV episodes and searches countless websites to find the perfect combination of healthy, delicious entrées and side dishes. After a trip to the grocery store to procure the ingredients she lovingly prepares, presents, and shares this culinary masterpiece with me. My sole contribution is selecting music.

Although the menu may change, Linda showers me with this authentic, unselfish expression of love every day. She has been doing so since before we were married. I may not say thanks often enough but I am grateful for all that she does for me, for us, and for our family.  Linda, I dedicate today’s post to you.

The Beatles’ second album released in the U.S.,  Meet the Beatles features familiar songs such as “All My Loving,” “I Saw Her Standing There,” and “I Wanna Hold Your Hand.” “Till There Was You” let us know the Beatles were going to be much more than pop stars. It was their cover of the song written for the Broadway play, The Music Man. Enjoy this low-fi version recorded from a “stereophonic” vinyl LP.
